About the people on the list
We strive to ensure that our position on recognising a detainee as a political prisoner is well-founded and as objective as possible. The examination of any case of deprivation of liberty in which a political motive is likely to be present requires documentation and time. The collection of case files itself is also often quite time-consuming, especially in cases where the investigation and trial are classified. Many of the cases mentioned on this page are still in the process of document collection and examination of the circumstances of these cases.
For some of the people mentioned on this page, who are likely to have been deprived of their liberty illegally and for political reasons, we have not been able to recognise them as political prisoners because they do not meet our criteria. This applies to those who fall within the exceptions in our criteria, i.e. those who are likely to have used violence against a person or called for violence on the grounds of nationality, race, religion, etc. But our failure to recognise a person as a political prisoner does not necessarily mean that we approve of or agree with their persecution. These people also need support and public attention.
